Every day we’re getting a little closer to finishing. It’s been slow going this week, partly due to me getting a new toy (I’m actually writing this post from my new phone).

All the tile is finally finished. The floor tiling took much longer than expected (which is the norm these days). We used little 1″ hex tiles for the floor. Months ago when we were still planning, I thought it would take forever to lay down little 1″ tiles, one at a time. However, after buying the tiles in 1 foot sheets (about 150 tiles in a sheet), I then figured it’d be a piece of cake. Ha!

The previous owners had a marble threshold joining the floors of the bathroom and the hallway. During the demo, we salvaged the marble piece.

But this weekend, while the misses was cleaning off some of the old mortar on the underside of the threshold using a hammer and cold chisel, she broke the threshold in half. Oh well.

We’ve fallen behind on our posts, so in effort to catch up, a recap is in order.

Tig primed the upstairs bathroom sometime last week, after grouting.

On Saturday, a work crew showed up, consisting of Jona (from DC), Sandy and Elvis (from NYC). They were converging in our house to give us a motivational boost and some much needed labor. In order to be good hosts, we scrambled to get a toilet into our unit. Now that we had some experience under our belt, it only took a couple of hours to install the toilet (unlike the last time, which took about 3 hours).

Woohoo!

It’s been a long time coming. And now we can finally use our bathroom again. We’ve been using the downstairs bath for the past 2 months. I must say the downstairs bath is pretty nice, but the upstairs is nicer.

We finally were able to use the shower today. And it feels luxurious. Why?

Now the fun part, a look at before and after photos. The good thing about this whole remodeling project, there’s nowhere to go but up!

A month ago, at a neighbor’s birthday party, I stumbed into a time warp when I stepped into the bathroom. Let me back up a second.

Our house is one of five houses that were built around the same time. When we visit our neighbor’s homes, it’s interesting to see the basic layout is the same, but changes have been made over time. A kitchen may have been re-configured, a third story dormer was put up, porches may be screened in, or entirely replaced.

At this party, nature called. When I stepped into the bathroom, the first thing I saw was:

It is with a heavy heart that I disclose our latest obstacle to moving into our master bedroom. For a couple months now, we’ve been hearing a creaking/cracking noise whenever we run the shower upstairs. This was not a problem with the first floor unit, so we were alarmed when the sounds started soft and got a little bit louder. Keep in mind that we had just celebrated a lovely bathroom remodel. Our remodeling egos were fragile and just starting to feel good about the work that had been done. The walls were all closed up and tiled over.
