The previous owners had a marble threshold joining the floors of the bathroom and the hallway. During the demo, we salvaged the marble piece.

But this weekend, while the misses was cleaning off some of the old mortar on the underside of the threshold using a hammer and cold chisel, she broke the threshold in half. Oh well.

Luckily, the big box home improvement stores sell them. For $12, you get a nice shiny new polished piece of carrera marble. Unfortunately (or fortunately), they don’t cut them in the store for you. How do you cut a piece of marble? With a wet saw (that has a diamond edged cutting blade).

marble and tile saw

It’s hard to tell in this picture, but the bottom (new) piece of marble is whiter than the top piece (a little bit yellowish). The original piece also has a crack right through it which you can’t see. Sorry, pics were taken with new phone (which is obviously a bad camera).

The wet saw worked great. Like cutting butter (albeit a little wet).

So a small batch of mortar later and ….
