Third time’s a charm. At first, our network hub was literally in our chimney stack closet. Then I moved it into the office closet, thinking it was a more accessible/central location. However hot summer temperatures and no a/c brought an early demise to both our router and cable modem. At least that’s what I think happened.
So I decided to move the network equipment into the coolest spot in our house: the basement.
The network “closet” is now 2 floors below, hanging from the center joist/post in our basement. Because I’ve got some equipment that require hardwired ethernet jacks (ie. not wireless), I had to fish some cable up from the basement, all the way up to the attic and then to the office.
After hooking up the new router and modem, things are working like a charm. There’s also an added benefit by putting the wireless router in the basement. We have better wifi coverage now. I think it’s because there are no walls in the basement to block the signal, just a couple of floors to go through.
