.. continued from “Broken Step = Bad Impression”

After the broken concrete step was removed, we dug down a few inches and filled in with gravel. There wasn’t much organic dirt under to begin with, it was mostly rocky fill. So we topped off with gravel and tamped it down.

concrete pad

Dad and I mixed up 200 lbs of concrete and poured it over the gravel. You can’t really tell that there’s 200 lbs of concrete from the picture. Serena didn’t believe me either. And actually we were short probably 50 lbs of concrete, and so we just filled some space with rocks in pebbles. And then the rest of the area, we filled with larger rocks that have been removed from all the dirt I’ve shoveled through in our front (bushes, tree, hedges, wall) and back yard (driveway).

This thin strip of concrete pad will support the first wooden step.

New header

While the concrete dried, I put in a new header and started to cut wood for the new front steps. Someday we will replace the actual porch floor. We just can’t handle another big project right now, I want to focus on the gardens this spring/summer.

To be continued…
