In the front study room, there is a niche next to the real closet which serves as valuable storage space. The previous owners installed an adjustable wire shelving system in this space - the kind frequently found in big home improvement chains. We decided to remove it and put in shelving that would fit the style and period of the home.

Our unit has two original built-ins: the butler’s pantry and the linen closet. Each of these storage spaces has shelving, basically planks of painted wood on supports.

As you can see the supports are made of one-bys that have been routed to fit the shelf. The bottom half is curved to look like a quarter round. We wanted to use these built-ins as a design guide for other shelving around the house.

The front study room’s niche is going to hold computer equipment and supplies, so we didn’t feel the need to have an adjustable system. Stay tuned as we design and build this weekend project…
