The study formerly known as front guest bedroom
Posted by serena under Home Renovation , Front Bedroom , Best OfThis…is our plan for the study.
The sketch was the result of too much circular dialogue about how the room should look, and said dialogue usually ends with Tig saying, “I have to see it first” or “I can’t picture it.” The only way around the impasse is to get our ideas out on paper so that we have something to work off of. Try as I might to get my husband to draw out his ideas, he usually manages to weasel the pencil into my hand: you draw it.
In the beginning, we had an ongoing debate about the purpose of the front bedroom. Tig thought it should be a guest bedroom, with the middle bedroom as the study. With two doors opening into the middle bedroom, he reasoned, it is a semi-public space. We use it as a hallway. I thought the front room was closer to the street, a little noisier, and gets good daylight, making it suitable for an office. It was also the smallest bedroom, and had a closet which could be used as a quasi “front hall closet” for coats and a vacuum cleaner (we have a shortage of good closet space). But since Tig works from home, I acquiesced and we made the middle room the study.
Fast forward a couple months later, he changes his mind. When the desk was out in the living room, Tig enjoyed looking out the front windows at the street. Now sitting at the computer in the middle bedroom, he missed seeing the comings and goings of the neighborhood. It reminds me of cats who like to sit on the ledge of a living room window, catching the sunlight, watching the world go by. We humans are not much different from the rest of the animal kingdom.
So this is how we came to putting in 3 more outlets in the front room and 2 dataports. This weekend, we’ll be working on shelving. Hopefully by Tuesday we will have a functioning office when our desk is delivered (more on that later).
